Built in 1823, the Ocracoke lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina, and the second oldest operating lighthouse in the entire United States. It stands 76 feet tall and uses its powerful Fresnel Lens to protect the boats sailing around the Hatteras islands.
The lighthouse grounds is protected by this quaint symbol of Americana, the white picket fence. The white picket fence boxes in the two-acre plot on which the lighthouse sits.
The entire lighthouse complex was moved in 1999 when the structure was threatened by eroding shoreline.
