This dripping wet grizzly bear is feeding on a freshly caught salmon. The large bear is gorging itself on the protein-rich eggs contained within the pregnant fish. Although the bear will eat all of the fish, the eggs are the most nutritious part.
Bears must eat dozens of pounds of fish a day during the summer in order to bulk up to survive the long winter. Bears spend the winter in hibernation, sleeping in their dens. If a bear has not built up enough body fat to survive the winter, it will likely die.
