The bleached bones of a pilot whale make for a haunting photograph on the white beaches of Mosquera Island, Galápagos, Ecuador.
Beaching events happen to many whale species, but pilot whales are some of the most common beachers of all. In 1985, a science team in New Zealand managed to save a pod of pilot whales from beaching by using the whale’s social cues to guide them back out to sea.
