The Ocracoke Light was built in 1823, after a nearby lighthouse was rendered obsolete due to shifting ocean currents. The lighthouse occupies a small two-acre parcel of land, with the white picket fence enclosing a lawn, shed, and keeper’s house (also built in 1823). The site is open for visitation, but the lighthouse cannot currently be climbed.
The Ocracoke light is located on Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. Ocracoke Island is a quiet, relaxed location, with a small town and population of locals. The lighthouse is the community’s main claim to fame.
