A bald eagle in flight. Photograph taken in the Chilkat Valley, Alaska.
Not all bald eagles migrate. Those who were born and reared in warmer southern climates tend to stay there for their whole lives. Alaskan eagles, on the other hand, fly south when the water freezes over and they can’t fish for salmon anymore. They return north in the spring, drawn back to their birthplaces by instinct.
