A small black-billed magpie watches a bald eagle eat carrion during winter in coastal Alaska in hopes the eagle might drop a scrap.
Both magpies and bald eagles are known for being opportunistic hunters. The magpie is an ominivore, foraging for nuts and berries, searching for insects and scavenging for meat. The eagle is a carnivore, relying not only on fish, but also ducks, coots, rabbits and snakes and carrion to sustain itself through harsh winter months.
