A grizzly bear walks alongside a road in front of a “Grizzly Crossing” or “Grizzly Xing” sign. The grizzly bears in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska, where this photograph was taken, are incredibly bold around humans. Humans have had to plan around the presence of these ubiquitous bears. Although endangered in the lower 48 states, there is a huge grizzly bear population in Alaska.
This grizzly crossing sign is right behind the Homestead Lodge, where participants in Shetzers annual Grizzly Bear Photography Workshop stay for a week. Bears often wander by in search of compost from the lodge.
