An Alaskan Grizzly Bear fishes for salmon in the McNeil River in the Katmai National Park and Preserve.
This picture of a grizzly bear was taken during the annual salmon run, the period of fall where salmon swim upstream to spawn in their ancestral mating grounds. Grizzlies from many miles away make the pilgrimage to the rivers, where they feast on the swollen food supply.
Salmon composes a large portion of a grizzly bear’s diet. Pregnant salmon are especially nutritious, as the bears crave the protein contained in high quantities in fish eggs.
