These great frigatebirds can stay in the sky for weeks at a time, riding the thermals and stealing other seabirds’ fish. But they’re on land right now, because that’s where the ladies are.
During mating season, male frigatebirds inflate the scarlet air pouches on their necks, hoping a female will be impressed by the size of the display. Once paired off, the male will gather materials for the female to build a nest with.
