Brown Bear Scratching Itself

This photo is a good illustration of why fur color isn’t the best way to tell black bears and brown bears apart. Despite its dark coat, this is a brown or grizzly bear — Brown bears can be colored as light as blondes and as dark as a black bear. One of the easiest way to identify a brown or grizzly is the hump on its back.
