The Budir church of Iceland is just one of three black churches found in this country. Speaking only of the exterior color, not religious activity, the church was painted with pitch. The same resin used on the hulls of boats so that this church would endure the harsh Iceland elements.
They do not call this the “Land of Fire and Ice” for no reason. A church has stood on this site since the 1700’s. Here the ancient earthen foundations of this site are seen as the grey clouds above provide a contrast of light to balance this architectural photo. Taken on location in the tiny hamlet of Budir, Iceland.
