Grizzly Bear Photo WorkshopJoin us for the trip of a lifetime photographing Alaskan Grizzly Bears in the pristine environment of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska at Silver Salmon Creek.

During our Grizzly Bear Photography Workshop, you will capture stunning images of grizzly bears in their natural habitat and perfect your wildlife photography skills while enjoying the picturesque settings of the Alaskan wilderness. Workshop guests will be immersed in the region’s spectacular scenic beauty, photographing coastal brown bears from early to late while enjoying chef-cooked meals and staying in an exclusive and strategically-located luxury lodge, where bears can often be seen just outside the deck and in the garden.

Why Join Our Photo Workshop?

Small Groups Only!
The Grizzly Bear Photography Workshop focuses on small groups and one-on-one instruction.

The small group style ensures maximum field time while catering to each person’s skills and interests and allows photographers to move around easily and efficiently. This helps get the best shots possible – capturing the best light, backgrounds and compositions throughout their wildlife photography – while maintaining respect for the animals. This proven approach results in natural images of the wildlife in their stress-free habitat.

Just recently, we had a sow and her twin cubs walk within 6 feet of the group without any signs of stress. She was very aware that we were there but just walked right by us. It was an incredible experience that our guests will never forget.

The Grizzly Bear Photography workshop is conducted in a beautiful coastal preserve with snow-covered peaks of volcanic mountains towering in the background while brown bears display instinctive behaviors. Throughout the course of the grizzly bear tour, photographers will have the opportunity to capture behaviors like:

  • Grizzly bear sows nursing their young
  • Grizzly bear cubs frolicking and playing in grassy meadows
  • Hungry grizzly bears digging for razor clams in tidal flats along the fertile coastlines of the Cook Inlet
  • Cute bear cubs playing with their siblings
  • Grizzly bears fighting and playful attacks
  • Cubs napping curled up with mom

Our Grizzly Bear Photography Location: Lake Clark National Park at Silver Salmon Creek

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is a photographer’s paradise and one of the hidden gems of the National Park System. Located 100 miles from Anchorage, Alaska, but accessible only by small aircraft or boat, the park is deep in the Alaskan wilderness. With 4 million acres of land, there is scenic beauty everywhere in this remote area of Alaska.

Grizzly bears and Brown bears are technically the same species. When the bears are inland, they are considered grizzly, and when coastal, brown. Many just refer to them as Coastal Grizzly Bears.

There are no roads for tour buses to pull up on, and there’s nothing like being out in the true Alaskan wild watching these incredible animals. Unlike sites that have been overrun with tourists, Lake Clark Preserve sustains its pristine environment. The park doesn’t have any crowds, boardwalks or viewing platforms. There are just beautiful landscapes and grizzly bears begging for your lens and that perfect image. Lake Clark is like nothing else you have experienced.

Grizzly Bear Photography Workshop - Lake Clark National Park

A sow nurses her two cubs that were born this year.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve at Silver Salmon Creek is the best destination to capture photos of grizzly bears in their natural habitat. The grizzly bears which live inside the wildlife preserve have never been hunted by humans, meaning that photographers can watch the bears acting naturally without adding any stress to these beautiful creatures. Although grizzly bears are still formidable wild animals that require respect, the bears inside Lake Clark National Park and Preserve peacefully live and let live.

Lake Clark National Park and Preserve is a great location to be introduced to wildlife photography, and the perfect setting for our Grizzly Bear Photography Workshop.

Our Photo Tour Lodge

While at Silver Salmon Creek in Lake Clark, our guests will stay in a luxury lodge, are served meals prepared by a chef, and most importantly, are given ample opportunity to photograph the bears as much as possible. We will be accompanied by a trained Bear Guide in the field who knows the animals just as well as our photography guides know cameras. We will take time when the light in not ideal to discuss different photographic techniques for capturing images of the bears in our private meeting room.

The Grizzly Bear Photography Workshop is an adventure that will leave you with lasting memories and plenty of pictures to commemorate the experience.

ITINERARY

Day 1
The tour begins over dinner in Anchorage, Alaska. Here, you will enjoy a gourmet meal while we get to know each other and discuss the exciting plans for the coming week. Matt will also let participants know what to expect when photographing the bears and throughout the photography workshop.
(Note: Participants attending the second workshop will be picked up and transported from Anchorage, Alaska by a colleague and will be met by Matt Shetzer in Lake Clark National Park.)

Day 2
In the morning, the group will be whisked away via a chartered flight to the breathtaking Lake Clark National Park, in the remote Alaskan backcountry. Passengers will be immersed in the beauty of Alaska as we fly towards the heart of bear country and pass three mountain ranges which include the peaks of Mt. Redoubt, Mt. Iliamna and Mt. Augustine. Their snow-topped peaks and steaming volcanoes, along with lush rain-forests, vast tundra and sun-kissed coastlines provide powerful scenic aerial photography opportunities.

The chartered Cessna’s land on the beach as we get ready for bears

After flying for a little over an hour, the aircraft will land on the beach, and passengers will be greeted by our hosts at the premier lodge at Silver Salmon Creek. We will then be transported by ATV, along with our luggage, to the beautiful, upscale lodge. Once settled, we get right into the action, heading out with our bear guide for our first day of photographing the brown bears in their natural habitat.

Days 3-6

Grizzly Bear photography tours

We will spend the next four days devoted to capturing images of these beautiful creatures in the Alaska wild, enjoying great meals and discussing different photography techniques to improve the quality of our images. In addition to capturing pictures of bears we might see bald eagles, shorebirds, songbirds, fox, porcupines and harbor seals.

Guests who take part in the wildlife photography workshop will enjoy the adventure of being in the wild without sacrificing the comforts of home. The lodge features warm, cozy rooms, and you can enjoy hot showers each day. Most cell phones work at the lodge and internet connectivity is available for guests.

OPTIONAL EXCURSION

During the Grizzly Bear Photography Workshop, there will be an optional excursion for anyone interested in visiting Bird Island by boat to capture images of the Horned Puffin, Tufted Puffin, Common Murre and Kittiwake.

Grizzly Bear photo tours. Optional Puffin Photography Tour.

Amazing views on our way to photography puffins

This is one of the best places in the world to photograph these adorable birds. The puffin, nicknamed “Clown of the Sea” is a seabird with lots of character, a colorful beak, bright orange legs and webbed feet.

Once arriving at the island, we will pull the boat up to the land and let all photographers off to view these great bird’s close-up. Puffin photography can be very challenging, but guests who take part in the puffin photography tour land on the beach can photograph the puffins in the rocks, on their burrows, and in-flight from the shores – not from a moving boat. This excursion is weather dependent as we need a calm day for the trip.

Day 7
We will head out again this morning for another action-packed digital photography session. Then we’ll head back to the lodge for breakfast and say goodbye to our hosts and thank them for spoiling us.

A typical room at the lodge. No roughing it here.

Once the wheels are up on our chartered flight, we will enjoy the spectacular scenery one last time as we conclude the photo tour on our flight back to Anchorage.

There are many nature photography opportunities for anyone who wants to explore the Anchorage area before or after the tour. We are happy to provide tips and insights if you are looking to extend your vacation on this a trip of a lifetime. Options include whale watching, viewing the bore tide on the way to a glacier boat tour in Whittier, fishing in scenic Seward or Homer, or taking the train and exploring Mount McKinley, the highest peak in North America, in Denali National Park.

(Tour schedules are subject to change due to changes in weather or other unforeseen events.)

Over 90% of Our Clients Are Repeat Customers

Here’s why.

Already booked our next trip: Learned to maximize our cameras with Matt

This is our second Grizzly Bear photo workshop with Matt at Lake Clark. Matt plans and organizes his workshops extremely well. He is a great communicator, before, during and after, which is a gift. We have learned many ‘nuggets’ during each of these workshops – how to use the camera to its fullest by assigning tasks to each button to speed up the capture, and how the Histogram is truly your friend! We appreciate Matt’s patient teaching style, and his humble desire to share his vast knowledge with each client. We were able to capture some truly amazing images by taking advantage the information he shared. We are already booked for the Costa Rica Workshop and look forward to more of Matt’s excellence! Check out his workshops and sign up. It will be an amazing experience. You will not be disappointed!

First-class lodge and a leader who prepares you for the field

Prior to the workshop, Matt was available to answer lots of questions–that availability really helped us prepare for this Alaska workshop. Once in Alaska, Matt was a great group leader and teacher. He was very patient with us as beginners and he did a phenomenal job making the group dynamic really, really great! The lodge that Shetzers chose was fantastic–really first class. We’re already looking forward to going back to Lake Clark with Matt in a couple of years. We learned so much that will help us with our daily photography for the rest of our lives. Thanks!

Clients rate us five out of five stars on Google.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

You should be in good physical health. While we will rely on the ATV-drawn carts to cover the miles, however will be walking with the bears quite a bit, and on uneven terrain through the sedge fields and tidal flats while carrying our photography gear.

You must be able to walk 2-4 miles per day at a moderate pace while carrying your gear to photograph the bears. We are not able to leave equipment in the ATV carts as the bears like to play with the bags and gear.

If you are concerned about the physical demands of this trip, please contact us and we would be glad to discuss the typical day and options for your needs.

Summer weather in Alaska’s Lake Clark region is ever-changing and can be anything from 80 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny to 50 degrees Fahrenheit with rain and wind. As the bears are protected in Lake Clark, therefore it lends to great photography as the bears are not bothered by humans displaying their nature behaviors.

CANCELLATIONS/TRIP INSURANCE

We strongly recommend all participants purchase trip insurance purchased from a third-party operator to protect your travel investment against medical emergencies, participant trip cancellations, trip interruption and delay, weather delays, missed connections, baggage loss or delay, emergency evacuation and repatriation or simply ‘Cancel for any reason coverage’.

Because Shetzers Photography must pay fees for reservations and leases of accommodations and transportation needs of the group far in advance of the workshop, all paid tour fees are non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be applied to a future workshop. Shetzers Photography runs small group workshops and wants to ensure the workshops are not canceled due to participant cancellations thus impacting the participants who do not cancel. All tour cancellations must be submitted in writing and will result in loss of deposit and all fees paid.

Please review our Workshop Terms and Conditions.

COVID-19 and Variants Policy

If regulatory restrictions in the hosting location prevent the workshop from running as scheduled, the workshop will be rescheduled to a future date. All participants must meet hosting country vaccination requirements. No refunds or rescheduling will be allowed due to guest cancellations when the workshop is able to run following all host location regulatory restrictions.

WAITING LIST – IF A TRIP IS SOLD OUT

Over the last few years all of our trips have sold out. We start to fill up about a year before the workshop and keep the website updated with the current workshop availability. If a workshop is full\sold out you can add your name to the waitlist. If a spot becomes available we will contact the guests immediately on the waitlist in the order they signed up. We tend to have the most cancellations 90-180 days before a trip starts so being on the waitlist can help you get on a sold out trip. We require no deposit to be on the waitlist.

PAYMENT/RESERVATIONS

The cost for the tour is $8,195.00 USD. The lodge has limited single room availability. If you would like to guarantee a private room for one person, the fee is an additional $750.00 USD. Otherwise, guests of the same gender might be roomed together based on availability.

To reserve a spot on this tour, we require a $1,000.00 deposit per person that is paid by credit card at the time of registration. Full tour payments must be completed by Janurary 1st of the year of the trip, and are paid by check or bank transfer.
